The academy recognises the importance of both academic progress of our students and the role we play in preparing them for ‘life in all its fullness’. As such, part of our role in that preparation is ensuring we promote and reinforce the five British values of:
  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Below are some of the ways that we embed these values throughout National.

Democracy
Democracy is explored through subjects such as personal development, history and religious studies. We also reinforce this through mock elections, student voice and our student councils.

The rule of law
We teach students the rules and expectations of the academy alongside the value and reasons behind the laws that govern and protect us as a nation. This includes reinforcing consequences from laws being broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service emphasise this message.

Individual liberty
Students are encouraged to know their rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms through our personal development lessons and are given advice on how to exercise these safely.

Mutual respect
Respect is one of the academy’s core values. The academy promotes respect through classroom and learning environments, as well as through tutor time and collective worship. Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum, for example the concept of ‘fair play’ in physical education.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefsTolerance of different faiths and beliefs
Our religious studies curriculum enables students to learn about different faiths, religions and cultures. Diversity is also promoted across the curriculum. Respect is one of our ARCH values and we endeavour to create a place where differences are celebrated.
