English literature is the study of how we engage with and think about the world – cultures, human relationships, history and the history of ideas. This course allows learners to undertake independent and sustained studies to deepen the appreciation and understanding of literature, including its changing traditions. You must engage with ideas in the subject matter and explore how they are presented. Enthusiastic involvement with discussion is essential. Apply your knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation, critically and creatively across texts. You will also explore ideas and actively discuss these with other students, developing your interest in and enjoyment of literature.
Students will study a unit of tragedy which includes a Shakespearean tragedy, a modern play and a 19th century novel. The second unit will explore ‘Elements of political and social protest writing’ and includes the study of a post 2000 novel, a collection of poetry and a pre-1900 play. You will also complete an independent study of a prose and poetry texts applying critical theory to deepen your evaluation of your chosen text.

- GCSE at grade 5 in English literature.
